A Talk program on "The role of United Nations in Building Peace in Nepal" was organized by United Nations of Nepal on the anniversary of United Nations Association of Nepal and General Convention on March 24, 2008.
The chief guest of the programme was Hon'ble Sahana Pradhan, the then Minister for Foreign Affairs whereas Asso.Prof. Dambar Bir Thapa, President of UNA, Nepal chaired the function. Addressing on the occasion Hon'ble Sahana Pradhan, the then Minister for Foreign Affairs said " Ever since becoming the UN member in 1955, Nepal has been upholding the centrality of this international body in the maintenance of international peace and security as well as in the promotion of economic and social development across the globe. The UN remains the sole global body to address all global issues from a global perspective. In our view, the UN is the center of the best hope for the continued survival and progress of humankind. It is with this conviction that Nepal has an unflinching faith in the UN Charter. The principles and purposes of the UN charter also form the basis of our foreign policy and foreign relations.
Everyone present here, I believe, are well aware of the circumstances leading to the involvement of the UN and, for that matter, the establishment of UNMIN to facilitate our ongoing nationally driven peace process in Nepal. At the request of Nepal, the Security Council established UNMIN under SC Resolution No. 1740(2007) on 23 January 2007 with a 12 month mandate, headed by a Special Representative of the Secretary-General to oversee the peace process in Nepal".
On the occasion Mr. Yadav Kant Silwal, former Secretary General of SAARC, Prof. Dr. Mohan Prasas Lohani, former Ambassador, Prof. Dr. Gopal Prasad Pokharel, Executive Director of Institute of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dinesh Tripathi, senior Advocate, Asso.prof. Dambar Bir Thapa, President of UNA, Nepal, Mr. Tulsi Das Shrestha, Secretary General of UNA, Nepal highlighted on the theme.
